South Coast Improvement Company (SCI), a design-build general contractor serving New England and the Mid-Atlantic states, recently finished a $3 million addition to the YWCA Southeastern Mass, located at 20 6th Street, New Bedford, Mass. The addition will be unveiled at a ribbon-cutting ceremony in August.

The East Coast and North East have some historical landmarks that are in need of safety and quality improvements. Those projects usually get the most attention while other buildings that are nearly as old are remodeled and renovated without a lot of publicity. For example, SCI (South Coast Improvement), a design-build general contractor in Marion, Mass., recently finished a $3 million addition to the YWCA Southeastern Mass building at 20 6th Street in New Bedford, Mass.

The 6,500-square foot addition will be used for after-school childcare on the first floor and supportive women’s housing programs on the second. The project includes: new millwork in all new classrooms and pantries; new bathrooms for ykids program and residential program; new pantries for ykids program and residential program; new reception area with natural light from storefront system; new electrical wiring throughout existing building; rewiring of all historical lighting fixtures to accommodate upgraded wiring; new bluestone and flagstone walkway in front and back of building; and new wrought iron fence in front of building.

Davis Square Architects was project architect, with WIHED (Women’s Institute for Housing and Economic Development) as the development consultant.
