The American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts recently announced the recipients of the 2019 Engineering Excellence Awards, with a number of projects in the state getting the recognition. One project stands out for its innovation.

The Fore River Bridge Project in Quincy/Weymouth, Mass., involved the replacement of the temporary lift span and provides a new crossing for roadway, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic. Further, it is also widening the channel and increasing the height of the bridge to improve maritime traffic operations.

Parsons, which is the engineering firm on the project, leverages innovative solutions such as a transverse sheave girder to support the life span machinery. The end result is improved function and reliability of the bridge, which is now designed to last 100 years.
